
A jury of eminent practicing architects and academicians has selected the winners of the national quest for the truly Filipino home design.
Professor Nicolo Del Castillo of the UP College of Architecture (UPCA) and Head of the Competition Secretariat said that while the judges had a tough time selecting the winners from the 79 entries that came in from Filipino architects and students based here and abroad, they are proud to announce the winners following a week-long judging process.
Winners of the competition titled “Ang Pinakamagandang Bahay sa Balat ng Lupa” (PMBBL) (translation: the most beautiful house on the face of the earth) from both the student and professional categories are:
In the Professional Category, first place was John Patrick Anthony L. Buensalido with Marie Veronique Boncan, Emereauldine Eliseo, Nathan Fabe, Ysrael Guy, Raymond John Balmes, Ernesto Medrano Jr. III, and Bayani Dela Pasion.
Buensalido designed a basic house on stilts wrapped in secondary skin of bamboo, rattan, cloth or even metal mesh which depicts flexibility of to give users freedom to personalize the house at minimal cost.
Placing second were Nestor Arabejo, Rowena Ramos, Bert Peeters. On third place was Jose Eduardo G. Calma with Sherwin Abad, Sarah Canlas, Benjamin Mendoza.
Honorable Mention went to Roger Magsakay
In the student category, first placers were Laurence Angelo Angeles, Norbert Cornelius Batangan, Jaycee Gopez. All are graduates of UP Diliman.
Their design is intended for modular construction and is made of two triangular shapes with an atrium in the middle. Roofing is made of movable panels to allow users flexibility.
Second place winners were UP Diliman undergraduates Kim Patrick Pullante, Dean Michael Ramos, Don Joseph Sebastian, and Marc Angelo Virtucio.
The third slot went to Deniece Yusun (a graduate of UP-Diliman) and Zada S. Ong (a graduate of National University of Singapore)
Honorable Mention went to Aristotle O. Santiago, a graduate of Technological Institute of the Philippines – Manila.
The panel of judges was composed of Ma. Cristina V. Turalba, vice chair of the Active Group of Companies; Geronimo V. Manahan, Ph. D., former Dean of the UP College of Architecture and partner of PROS architects and planners; Jose Pedro Recio, a partner of the design firm Recio+Casas Architects; Leon M. Mayo, president of Consultants for Comprehensive Environmental Planning Inc. (CONCEP) and Jean I. Cornejo Dean of the College of Architecture, Adamson University.
